Tory County Councillor Guy McGregor, who is the Roads & Transport supremo at Endeavour House, has sought to clarify his comments last week about Dr Dan Poulter MP, claiming that the emotion of the issue got the better of him.
Ludicrously Cllr McGregor, who claimed he would never vote for Dr Dan again only last week, now seems to expect us to believe that Dr Dan has his full support. Never has a volte face been performed with such speed!
McGregor has clearly come under huge pressure from members and colleagues in the Central Suffolk & North Ipswich Conservative Association, who were unhappy that one of their most senior county councillors would say publicly that their MP did not have his vote. But despite his statement of retraction, you have to ask whether he will actually vote for him in the secrecy of the ballot; a few years ago rumours reached Ipswich Spy that McGregor once failed to vote for himself, since his postal vote went unused. Naturally we have no way of confirming this.
“For reasons of conscience, religious belief, and reflecting the views of many of my constituents, I for one believe that the sanctity of marriage can only be maintained if it remains an act of commitment between a man and a woman.
“In expressing my views, I made comments about the MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich which I would like to clarify.
“The way a politician chooses to vote on any issue should be subject to legitimate and meaningful debate but ultimately it is for them to decide and to justify their position to the electorate.
“Dan Poulter is doing a good job as MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich and he has my support.”
Dr Dan wasn’t prepared to comment further on McGregor’s latest comments to the local media.
